D-4D engines: operating characteristics

D-4D designates a series of turbocharged and common diesel engines -Rail injection. These are installed in Toyota and Lexus vehicles. They were first used in the 1999 Toyota Avensis. In a short time they had earned a reputation for being reliable, durable, powerful and economical engines.

Features of D-4D engines

Most D-4D engines have 4 cylinders in-line with 16 valves. With the exception of engines 1VD-FTV with 8 cylinders and 32 valves and 1ND-TV and 2WZ-TV with 4 cylinders and 8 valves. Depending on the version, the engine block is made of aluminum or cast iron. The fuel system is usually from Denso, a little less often from Siemens or Bosch. The valve timing mechanism uses a chain. Only a few versions are equipped with a strap. D-4D engines are all turbocharged. Some of these may be equipped with an intercooler. In some cases, a variable geometry turbocharger is used instead of a conventional one.

Common defects of D-4D-engines

There is a high risk of thermal damage to the cylinder head gasket. 1AD-FTV; 2AD-FTV
